Iain Dale's Top 100 UK Political Blogs - 13 comments

Iain Dale is compiling his annual list of the top UK political bloggers, and he wants you to submit your 'top blogs'.

You know what I'm going to say here, right? As Bob rightly says, quality counts, not popularity; and, as ever, I'd like to see the most thoughtful and challenging blogs given a boost, and the six-post-a-day rehashing-of-other-people's-posts-will-get-me-links-type blogs, the 'all my enemies are idiots'-type blogs, and anything produced by obvious egomaniacs, get a thumbs-down.

But, hey, I'm bored of saying it, and you're bored of hearing it. Plus it's my birthday in two days, and I'm a human being, not a machine, so: vote for Bloggers4Labour, your Bloggers4Labour, the People's friend, the Thin Red Line. Vote early, and vote often, and if I get in the 2008/9 book (and receive a complimentary hardback copy) I promise to publish a photo of myself with a ridiculous grin, pointing at the write-up.

Perhaps Labour Blogs don't make it onto the top 100 blogs because Labour Bloggers like Bob Piper tend to abuse the folk who comment on their blogs...

Quote/s:

"You are talking absolute bollocks."

&

"Come on this site and talk out of your arse if you wish, but if you do you'll have to live with the consequences. And in this case, you've made a complete twat of yourself."

&

"Why not have the balls to just admit you got it wrong... or at least stay silent, at least that way you won't look quite so much of a tit."

&

"Fuck off yourself, It's not my fault you're a thick twat!"

&

"I get my guts from votes from the public... you get your kicks by fondling your dick in private."

So; as you can see.......if this is an example of 'balanced comment' from a Labour Blog.....is it any wonder that 'Labour Blogs' fail to get a mention amongst the brightest and the best?

Perhaps when the 'Labour Bloggers' can walk without dragging their knuckles along the ground; then the rest of the blogosphere might start taking them seriously.

What are you talking about? Lots did. One came 11th.

Perhaps when the 'Labour Bloggers' can walk without dragging their knuckles along the ground; then the rest of the blogosphere might start taking them seriously.

That's a very dim-witted comment, and it makes you look like an idiot, someone who is either unwilling or unable to judge people on their merits. I say that in my capacity as a human being with a brain and, dare I say, a heart too. It's even more tragic to make such a statement when there aren't even any votes on the line.

In the end, you lose, because smart, interesting people will ignore you, and you'll end up conversing with other fools.

And your comments about Bob Pipers responses would be....?????

I notice that you conveniently omit to address my main point.

Is it a 'given' that ALL Labour bloggers simply abuse people on their blogs?

And where exactly am I to find 'smart and interesting people' on Labour Blogs considering Bob Pipers response and now your own?

Is 'fondling your dick in private' a smart or interesting comment then?

Perhaps I could ask you again to address my central point.....or will you simply default to more personal abuse?

I also meant to say.......thank you at least for allowing me to post on a Labour Blog (me being an ex-Labour voter)
I note that 'Labour Outlook' prefer to simply remove dissent.

I'm sure Walter Wolfgang would know all about that. ;O)

[Response to comment #3] You started it. You behaved like a troll and spouted some ludicrously unreasonable statements. I could quite legitimately have deleted your comment, but I thought I might convince you to be more reasonable and open in future.

Bob's blog is his own private space and he's entitled to say whatever he likes. He doesn't speak for Labour bloggers in general, he speaks for himself, and quite right too. Anyone who makes party-political generalisations is death to sensible discussion. I don't know what you had to do to attract Bob's ire, but I suspect you pushed him quite far. I assume you're the same "Silent Hunter" who posts at Comment Is Free...

BTW, I love dissent.

Yes indeed I am!

And on several other blogs.

Nice to meet you.....no! really!

Forgive me but, when you say I made 'ludicrously unreasonable statements' ....did I call you 'a tit' or did I say that you were 'speaking out of your arse'.....or 'fondling your dick'?

I don't think I did........those would be Bob Pipers words...not mine.

Which you seem to think is fine and that I must have provoked him in some way - and that this justifies his responses; although you then say that my comments which frankly don't even come close to the vitriol of his, would be enough for you to 'legitimately delete my comment'
Come on....even a dyed in the wool Labour supporter must see that that's hardly equitable.

You say that he's 'entitled to say what he likes'......and yes, I would support that statement, freedom of speech (if you read my comments on Cif you will know) is something I would fight tooth & nail for - even when it's as reprehensible as Bob Pipers comments.

It is then, rather surprising that you would appear to be reluctant to accord me a similar freedom to state my case.

If you wish, you can visit Mr Pipers blog and view my comments there, although he may well have deleted them by now.
I would just add that his last two comments to me were sent to my private e-mail address; presumably, he would be too ashamed for his 'voters' to see the mask of geniality and bluff good humour slip to reveal the bully underneath.

Interesting talking to you and could I enquire as to who you are on Cif as it clearly isn't Blogger4Labour........it's not 'Tooter' is it? ;O)

Yeah!....I like dissent too!

See?.....we do have something in common. :O)

Keep well old support! ;O)

I don't want to get into the detail of what was said to/by Bob, but of the two principles: (a) it's Bob's space, and (b) people should be nice and 'reasonable', (a) is much the most important one, and if people don't like that, they should go elsewhere. A fact of life is that the more popular bloggers have a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and therefore a more onerous task policing the comments. At the very least, there's only so much time in the day.

I think I posted a couple of comments on CiF before the last General Election (as B4L), but the signal-to-noise ratio is impossibly high there, and the Jew-hatred nauseating. No, CiF is an experiment gone horribly wrong: not dissent, but the politics of the madhouse.

At 11:37 AM, July 22, 2008, Blogger Silent Hunter said...

I agree with your comment about Jew-hatred which IS as you say nauseating, but as you also say....(a)!

As I myself have been told by others on Cif when I complain about their 'censorship' of posts critical of New Labour......."Their gaff; their rules"

I'm not really that fussed about what Bob said to me......as you point out......when they resort to that kind of personal abuse; they lose the argument! :O)

Still, interesting talking to you B4L. BTW if you have read my posts before on Cif; you will know that I am far from being a Tory supporter, but as a 'former Labour supporter' I am perhaps more excised by their wholehearted embrace of Thatcherism......which I truly HATE.
So perhaps you could call me the opposite of a 'convert to Labour'...as you probably know, (being Jewish I assume) 'converts' tend to embrace their new religion as zealots......well now I would describe myself as the antithesis of a Labour zealot ;O)

Don't be stranger on Cif now :O)

Happy Birthday Andrew. Might try and catch up with you for a drink on Saturday. I've just got back from holiday and when I have figured out how to RSVP on facebook...

As for this blog slapping thing - eh - Ian Dale has cornered the market and sadly right-wing (as opposed to just Tory) blogs do seem to be beating us on number of hits - whether that is because they are more in the gutter I do not know. Whatever, I think we on the left get more of a say on the blogosphere than we do in the MSM, so it is not all bad. As Devil's Kitchen says, blogging is a sort of communal activity and without the diversity of opinion we are all losers. DK says Labour blogger Ministry of Truth is one of his top bloggers and DK is one of mine despite finding his views distasteful on most things. By the way, SilentHunter, I have never (after 3 years 'labour' blogging) felt the need to remove any comment from my blog - people can call me what they like and they frequently do. In the end I hope it reflects worse on them than it does on me. I try not to get involved in slanging matches but we are all human - generally I think you will find Bob is pretty polite - maybe he lost his temper - we are all human after all!

At 11:25 PM, July 23, 2008, Blogger Bob Piper said...

Neil, actually, I lost my patience with him, not my temper. What he doesn't say was that as a series of trolling comments he posted a comment on my blog telling me to F... off.

I deleted it, but e-mailed him to explain that I don't post that sort of language on my blog, and gave him a piece of my mind whilst doing so. It is that private e-mail that he has quoted from.

I make no apologies. If people come on my blog and are abusive, or take the piss, or are polite, they will get a response accordingly. What I don't do, although I am relatively liberal about the language, is allow four letter words that may cause offence to people who do not want to read that sort of stuff.

Oh Come on....B O B!

That's not strictly true now is it?

Tell the truth!

After playing fast & lose with abuse in your replies to me.......I told you that you could Fuck Off! :O)
Including the smiley face!!!

You then send 2 abusive e-mails to my private e-mail address so as not to be seen to 'lose it' in front of all the nice folk who frequent your blog........both of them! LOL

What was it you said to me again....in private?

"...I get my guts from votes from the public... you get your kicks by fondling your dick in private..."

Oh but of course......what 'you' don't do is publicise that you prefer to use bully boy tactics, where no one is watching.

So spare me the 'holier than thou' attitude Bob......you like to dish it out but don't like it when you get it back in your face.

Neil Harding:

I'm glad to hear that you don't indulge in censorship of your blog, unlike some, and you're right about boorish behaviour reflecting upon the user (hope you're paying attention BOB) however, I assume that you can visit Bobs site and see the exchange for yourself, or I could provide a copy as I tend to save stuff like that for use later.
Either way, hopefully you will see that Bobs interpretation falls somewhat wide of the mark shall we say.
But as you say.....maybe he just lost his temper.....I'm willing to accept the possibility that he might be human after all. :O)

[Subject] StateDemocracy.org Equips You for the 2008 Elections

Dear Citizen:
Are you ready yet for the November 4th Elections? How about your friends, family, and neighbors?
More Americans are expected to vote this year than ever before in history, so don’t be left out! Be sure to ask everyone you know the following questions:
 Are you registered to vote? If you moved recently, have you updated your voter registration?
 Did you apply for an Absentee Ballot? Do you know your state may not require any reason?
 Can you find your local Polling Place? Do you know it may have changed from last time?
The answers to these questions -- and all your voting needs -- can be found at www.StateDemocracy.org -- the FREE 1-Stop citizen empowerment portal that Delivers Democracy to your Desktop! StateDemocracy is among the Internet’s first (since 2001) and most encompassing civic empowerment tools.
In order to boost voter participation this year, StateDemocracy.org is offering FREE widgets for all 50 states. You can simply download and embed these widgets into your own website so your visitors can register to vote, get an absentee ballot or find their local polling place.
Lobby Congress Via StateDemocracy
StateDemocracy.org also equips you to maintain an active dialog with your state and federal lawmakers once they are elected. And RIGHT NOW is an especially opportune time to contact your U.S. Senators and House Member, as Congress takes up major legislation on such issues as offshore oil drilling, another economic stimulus package and all federal appropriations bills over the next few weeks.
As you lobby your elected officials, remember that lawmakers view your constituent input as reflective of scores of other citizens who felt similarly, but didn’t have (or take) the time to share their opinions.
LobbyDelegates.com Further Empowered Grassroots Voices
Over the past 5 months, you may have visited www.LobbyDelegates.com, along with 26,000 other visitors. This latest public interest portal by the StateDemocracy Foundation remained the only online tool enabling rank-and-file Democrats to lobby all 800+ Super Delegates on which candidate to back for the party’s Presidential nomination.
StateDemocracy Foundation Website Users Unite!
Many of you have used our StateDemocracy.org and LobbyDelegates.com tools in recent times, and have hopefully found your experience uplifting and empowering. I encourage all of you to help spread the news about StateDemocracy.org to enable more of our fellow citizens to Connect! Engage! And Empower!
Sincerely,
