Suppressing the BNP - 5 comments
This is almost too ridiculous for words: six companies will withdraw advertisements from Facebook on the off-chance that a non-BNP supporter will visit a BNP (Wikipedia) group page and decide that the same advertisements they see randomly appearing on every other page on the site imply, in this case, some kind of corporate endorsement, or acceptance, of BNP policies. If anyone owns shares in First Direct, Vodafone, Virgin Media, the AA, Halifax, or the Prudential, now might be the right time to sell, if those companies are so quick to make fruitless political gestures that allow additional exposure to their competitors, while doing nothing to thwart the BNP except offer them additional publicity and swelling their victim-complex. If the named companies decided they didn't want BNP supporters as customers, or were prepared to campaign against the party, that would be different altogether, but their corporate image is hardly worth us bothering about. More here, and here.

The BNP might almost have been invented to distract good, principled, intelligent people from the international fight against bigotry, intolerance, and religious/ethnic/racial victimisation, towards a single struggle against a tiny party that can hardly be separated from the murky world of thugs and madmen (remember Derek Beackon?) that makes up the extremities of the political world. The tragedy is that, by ducking the substantive moral and policy issues, opponents' emphasis on (say) racism appears to shift from to being a moral abuse to, as this new Facebook group argues, a 'terms of service' violation. Forcing the hand of advertisers and open social networking sites, so that poor ignorant members of the public can be insulated from the BNP's extreme views, can't help opponents to mobilise the population against them.
I can't think of any cause that is so critical, or infectious, as to justify the population being kept in ignorance. An account of the atrocious record and (occasionally criminal) behaviour of BNP councillors in office would surely carry more weight. Furthermore, a grown-up analysis of their policies - a plausible-looking summary of which appear here - would allow us to go beyond the word 'fascist' to say that they are morally wrong, inegalitarian, and opportunistic; that they breach universal human rights; and that their mishmash of authoritarian economic policies - culled from both traditional left and traditional right - would make people poorer both here and abroad, just as they have failed under every other government that has ever tried them. Are we unsure that we can win these arguments among the electorate? Ministry of Truth takes some of them on here, but this is rarely done.
So, while I'm sympathetic to the old adage that the only good BNP activist is one holding a steak over his eye, we should allow parties we despise to organise on Facebook within its rules, just as Facebook allows us to organise within its rules, and concentrate on promoting our own, positive message, and criticising stupid and damaging views - with our sights on the electorate, not on ourselves.

I blogged yesterday about it being better to beat the BNP at the ballot box than to call for them to be stopped from doing what other parties already do. As long as it is a legal party it has a right to promote itself.
Sorry forget link:

Thanks for posting a link to my facebook group.
You said that "we should allow parties we despise to organise on Facebook within its rules"
We do (the tory party ;p)
But the point is that the BNP are not if they had groups that were for BNP members and encouraged people to join advertised canvassing and events etc etc in the same way as the Labour party does - then as sickening as it would be I wouldn't be able to complain about them doing it.
i'm all for democracy and freedom of speech but not when its inciting violence, or attacking individuals/groups etc etc
They are working outside facebook rules and as such we are calling for fb to remove the groups.
The Groups attack asylum seekers and post racist/fascist footage and pictures as well as links to other websites showing the same.
FB rules give them the right to remove groups/users/content if it is deemed unacceptable
"While we believe users should be able to express themselves and their point of view, certain kinds of speech simply do not belong in a community like Facebook. Therefore, you may not post or share Content that:
is obscene, pornographic or sexually explicit
depicts graphic or gratuitous violence
makes threats of any kind or that intimidates, harasses, or bullies anyone
is derogatory, demeaning, malicious, defamatory, abusive, offensive or hate"
If the BNP groups are operating contra Facebook's rules, then the content should be removed (and if it's the kind of rubbish we expect, so much the better), but that's surely a matter of letting FB know and awaiting their judgement. FB don't have to respond to public opinion - though if they don't act promptly then they're being irresponsible - so the decision has nothing to do with the number of people who join your FB group.
The wider point is whether BNP content should be suppressed in general, and I suspect the vast majority of people joining the group believe it should be. I go back to the point that (obviously within the law) we should let the public make up their own mind. I have faith that many existing BNP-ers will see it for what it is.
The Racist groups are now poised for a real political breakthrough in the East Midlands for the next European elections which fall in May 2009. The local elections last time also showed that once the racist win council seats. It takes longer to defeat them and makes it easier for them to gain more Councillors. The real target for us now is for Nottingham County Council & European Elections 2009. Lets stand up for respect, dignity and diversity Preventing racism groups from gaining Councillors in the first place is crucial. The racism is now making a serious mark on the political landscape in the East Midlands. They intend to contest a record number of seats in Mays elections 2009 and we will need more members to come forward as potential candidates and activists. Now is the time to get involved, be a part of history and help stop them being elected in Nottinghamshire area. Racism must not be allowed to flourish. Our message must be received and understood, in every corner of our society, in our streets and in the workplace. We should practise and promote racial justice and inclusion and reject any political party that attempts to stir up racial and religious hatred and fear or asylum seekers. We should be affected by the words of hate these extremists will be bad for Newark & for Nottinghamshire. We need to go out & engage in a very direct way with all our voters in 2009 Elections. I WILL be the first to stand up to them lets stop the breakthrough in NEWARK Area.
They realise that they can only hope to grow by presenting a more respectable and moderate image of themselves. For this they need the media. These groups will abuse, manipulate and lie in order to get a their message across.
Migration from around the World & Eastern Europe to Newark area, has been good. We should not be frightened and most not ignore the hate message which will be dangerous for Newark if they put up candidates in 2009.NEWARK is thriving thanks to the many that come to our area to work. Lets Stop the hate from Racist groups
These groups are moving into our Newark area for next election. Polish migrants find a welcome to the NEWARK area.
A lot of Poles are attracted to the Newark area because they dont want to live in the big cities, where they dont feel so welcome.
The Poles are also helping boost the local economy.
Many have found work in the factories & Residential homes.
Without foreign workers, Newark could not grow. Polish people have been happy with the help of English lessons. There is a willingness to accept the foreign workers.
Polish and other Eastern Europeans on constructions sites, have been most welcome. They are just the same as us, except maybe most of them are willing to work hard. The Poles are also helping boost the local economy.
Many leading food producer is probably the biggest recruiter of foreign workers in the Newark. They have started recruiting foreign workers about last few years because the skills shortness just didnt exist in the Newark area. Without foreign workers, Newark could not grow, We could be holding a general Election real soon, are you ready to give us your help and support.
