Thousands March - 6 comments
[Via] For a quiet life, appeasement of Iran, against internationalism, and to oppose mistreatment of the Palestinians - when it suits them:
Armed groups in Iraq have killed dozens of Palestinian refugees since 2003. Last month, Human Rights Watch documented killings, threats of violence and other security concerns of the estimated 34,000 Palestinian refugees in Iraq in the report, "Nowhere to Flee: The Perilous Situation of Palestinians in Iraq."

Come on Andrew - I didn't join the march today, because I don't think that Iraq or particularly Afghanistan would benefit from an immediate withdrawal of UK troops. But lots of my friends went and I think that the label of 'sanctimonious', which you applied to that post, is utterly unjustified and totally unnecessary.
Blimey, well, OK, I've removed that label.
That's a cheap shot. How would you feel if I accused you of colluding with neo-cons, killing Iraqi civilians and wanting to kill innocent Iranians?
I don't think that really helps things in any way.
And for what it's worth, I didn't go to the demo because I spent the day with a trade union leader who had to leave her country after the Colombian armed forces attacked her car with a, probably US supplied, hand held missile.
Come off it, I'm not going to stick up for people who are prepared to march under banners that claim Blair/Bush/whoever are murderers (a complete abuse of the English language), likewise coalition troops (except in a handful of cases). I'm not going to defend people whose concern for the welfare of Palestinians only applies when the Israelis are involved, and certainly not anyone who seriously believes America "wants to kill Iranians" - that's insane. Besides, they set out two scenarios in advance under which Iran might be attacked: if they really did have serviceable nuclear weapons, wouldn't you be a tad concerned? This isn't really about support for Palestinians, Iraqis, or Iranians, they're just convenient victims used (for years) by the far-left to build up their support among well-meaning, but ill-informed people.
I'm not an expert on Colombia, but I don't intend to be a hypocrite, so all I can say is that I support liberal, democratic politics, and (FWIW) will criticise the USA positively or negatively according to their support for those democrats, and anything they can do to disarm aggressive forces.
I think it's staggering that you accuse all of the people on the demo of "marching for a quiet life, appeasement of Iran, against internationalism, and to oppose mistreatment of the Palestinians - when it suits them."
I thought it was one of those red mist moments that we all have, but I guess you really mean that those are the only motives that the thousands at that demo, the millions who marched before the war, and the majority of the country that opposes the war have for their political position.
I presume you also think that of people like Zbigniew Brzezinski hold similar beliefs?
Well, partly red mist, but I'm prepared to bet that Palestinians were only mentioned insofar as Israel was involved; that the current stumbling-block to two-state negotiation wasn't mentioned; that everyone other than the real terrorists were identified as such; that Iranian and Iraqi democrats were pretty thin on the ground; and that Respect activists used "Islamophobia is the new racism" to get a few more members. Don't think I'm saying this for the fun of it - this is poison to the Left.
Unfortunately the possibility of a sensible debate about Trident has also been stymied by people taking sides between the USA and Iran, and making ludicrous claims about the former "wanting to kill" citizens from the latter.
Note that I didn't say anything about any other group: neither the million(s) who marched before, nor the majority you refer to, though I'd say that the majority is far more likely to be reasonable than these marchers.
