Ashes predictions - 5 comments
England begin their defence of the Ashes in Brisbane tonight (midnight GMT).
I'll have Test Match Special on the radio, and together with the packet of CIA "stay awake" tablets issued to all Euston Manifesto bloggers, I'll try to stay awake for as much of the action as possible. Can't wait.
So, who would like to get their prediction of the final series score down on paper?
I'm going to go for 2-2 (with one draw), just like last year. Can't say I've checked the betting much, but you can get 10-1 on that at Bet365. Worryingly, they're only offering 4-1 on an Australian 5-0 whitewash.
If you fancy it, why not also predict the score at the end of the first day (if Australia bat first, and/or if England do) ?
Just for fun, and to set the ball rolling, I'm predicting 320-6 whichever team bats. You have just over two and a half hours (or slightly more if I'm feeling generous) to submit your prediction. The nearest guesser will have praise lavished upon them.
Update: Bah. There's a slight difference between 346-3 and 320-6, but it looks like I was closest...

2-1 or (more likely, I think) 3-1 Australia. I'm a pessimist.
407-7
I hardly understand cricket, but I watched it last year for the ashes.. I think my prediction is sensible!
I reckon 3-1 to the baggy green!
When I heard Giles and Jones were gonna play instead of Monty and Read, I just knew it was gonna be one of those days!!!
And what about Harmy? :)
Yes, not a good night really. Still, while its very easy to get pessimistic, I remember how I felt after Lords in 2005.
That said I think this England team doesn't have the bowling attack (especially if Harmison is as wayward as he was when I was going to sleep last night).
Oh well, I'll just have to watch the highlights through my fingers
Think I went to sleep (with the radio on) about 2 am in the end, but was woken up by the 2nd wicket, and then again at 6 am. My recollection was that England weren't actually *bad* (not even Harmison), or made mistakes, they just weren't at all threatening, partly due to the conditions. Not a good toss to lose, then.
Clearly we *can* do it, we do have a handful of really special players, and - especially if Australia suffer injuries (it happens), I don't see why we can't beat them at least once, naive fool that I am.
