Sea of Trivia - 9 comments

Namely, the mainstream media's obsession with Tony Blair's (date of) departure. Tom Hamilton and Antonia both note the distinct lack of coverage of the speech on social exclusion the PM made earlier today. Says Tom:
It was his [Blair's] own fault that he had to say, early on, "I am not talking about 'baby ASBOs', trying to make the state raise children, or interfering with normal family life", but once he'd got over that there was a lot of sense talked, and some good engagement with the issues and with some relevant background research. Since it's such a meaty speech, there's plenty in there to disagree with and argue against, but that's politics.

Actually, if someone could design a nice little "Labour Blogger Says Blair Must Go" thingummy that could sit on the sidebars of those of us who think Mr Blair must go, then that'd be quite helpful.

Surely Nick Robinson is a professional?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Nick Robinson is a WANnabe kingmaKER.

Chris,

We need three graphics: each with the same picture and text, but "Must Go", "Must Stay", and "Can Go or Stay, I Just Don't Care Any More" crossed-out accordingly.

Dave,

Professional, yes, in much the same way as a Fortune Teller, or Mortgage advisor.

Seb,

I've already sworn once on the blog today, so I'll have to let you speak for me.

It's all very well to say that the mainstream media is obsessed with the date of Tony's departure - which it undoubtedly is - but don't you think that the PLP bear some responsibility too?

However obsessed they may be with the date of his going, you can be sure that Gordon is more so.

I expect you're right, though the term "trivia" is no less applicable as a result.

It's just not the kind of thing that interests me, which is just one reason why B4L gets less traffic than Iain Dale.

the current crisis is nothing to do with Nick Robinson........ did Nick or john pienaar or adam boulton put those 8 govt members upto resigning?

do you think they would be speculating needlessly unless they had been briefed (which does't make the speculation needless, it makes it informed)?

to blame the media for the PLP waking up to a hung parliament next time round (seemingly at bst) unless Blair is serious background by then is not by any stretch the medias fault.

a bad workman blames his tools, in this case it's the tools blaming the workmen.

Maybe, but I did post this before the resignations, and the fact is that these people do not/cannot talk about serious political issues, just 'court politics'.

parliament is in recess...

all the major networks have health, education, science, foreign correspondants who talk about the state of their respecvtive specialties.

When there is actual real politics happening (which is not so much because labour and the tories agree on most things) like a bill going through then NIck et.al are discussing policy differenced and vote counts and the state of service.....

problem at the moment is half the plp is transfixed on the upcoming elections/blair/lebanon and thats where the ructions are being felt - those then get back to the "chief political correspondants"....... who have nthing else to do between now and conference other than be....... chief political correspondants.

If all people in politics are talking about is Blair, thats all the correspondnats can talk about - the PLP (and charles clarke) is setting this agenda.

But i reiterate my first point - the health, education, science and foreign affairs correspondnats are the ones these days who cover the specialities of each govt department and report on what is happening in those areas - leaving the political correspondants to deal with the politicians (many of whom are saying "stupid things")
