London venue - 13 comments

No recommendations yet for a venue for February's B4L London meetup...

What I'm looking for is, ideally, a place that's reasonably central, 'does' food, has Wi-Fi, and isn't too far away from a capable railway station. Here are a few possibilities, courtesy of BeerInTheEvening's search form, in no particular order:

The Bunch of Grapes, London Bridge
The Apple Tree, Clerkenwell
The Knights Templar, Chancery Lane
The Lord Moon Of The Mall, Whitehall
The Morpeth Arms, Pimlico

If anyone knows these joints, and can keep me up to date with whether or not they've been demolished, or gutted and turned into a Tesco Metro, that'd be handy.

I'll update this with new recommendations that I'm sent.

I suppose the Wi-Fi isn't that important, but a food capability would avoid everyone having to up sticks with the munchies at 9 o'clock. Bear in mind that this is looking like a Friday evening.

Just noticed, here are a couple that are up for "Pub of the Year 2005":

The Market Porter, London Bridge (that's not me in the photo)
The Royal Oak, Borough

Lord Moon of the Mall.

Cheap beer, cheep food (for Central London anyway) and walkable from work. Genius.

Good old Wetherspoons. Based in Watford, you know. :-)

I second that! I have taken friends there, it's spacious, has good food, borders the 'West End' and is about ten minutes walk from the Houses of Parliament

Paul - stop showing off!

I am still amused by the fact that wi-fi is a requirement when the meeting in Brighton was characterised by something as high tech as a scrap of paper with "B4L" scribbled on it.

At the Brighton Bloggers meetings there was always someone with an iBook posting live, but perhaps we're not quite that far gone.

The great Joan Armatrading would be very disappointed to hear her flyer described as a 'scrap of paper'. On the other hand she might be grateful for the extra publicity :-)

So we're going for the Lord Moon of the Mall? Isn't there a pub with a slightly more ridiculous name in the vicinity?!

I did enjoy the b4l scrap of paper. And I'm not sure I'd risk a laptop with that many pints of beer around!

Why, were you hoping to make a 'live' blog entry ;)

I thought I was away that weekend, so I'd stayed out of this, but it turns out I had the dates all wrong - so I should be able to come after all. I'm not a big fan of the Lord Moon of the Mall, though. Lots of decent pubs on the river near London Bridge.

I've seen it done, but I don't have a laptop, have enough trouble posting late let alone live, and besides, most of the potential audience will be within the same room.

Lord Moon isn't a shoo-in yet - it depends upon the weight of public opinion. I think it's currently on two thumbs-up, though I would have probably gone for one of the London Bridge ones personally (say, The Market Porter), so that'd also be two thumbs-up with Tom's approval. Can't remember the name of the place I went to that was on the river by London Bridge (the trip took in a good gawp at David Blaine who was, at the time, suspended in his glass toilet) - it was OK, but swarming with suits (like me) and so perhaps not the best place for our bash.

I still have a few people to chase up, but in the meantime anyone with a view can express it here, and I'll try to make a democratic decision after a few days.
