Maria Hutchings - 2 comments
A link to Stephen Newton's post on Maria Hutchings, a woman famed for taking her chance to lambast Tony Blair during the last election campaign, and for expressing the following progressive viewpoint:
With an increasing number of immigrants and asylum seekers then the pot is reduced for the rest of us. Mr Blair has got to stop focusing on issues around the world such as Afghanistan and Aids in Africa and concentrate on the issues that affect the people of Middle England, like myself who pay the taxes which keep the country going... I don't care about refugees.Nor they about you. David Aaronovitch was frightened.

Economics not taught to Tory candidates then? Basic principles of economic growth a complete unknown?
Thanks for link to Stephen, I keep finding blogs I'd missed all the time.
I would like to start off by saying I am a labour/lib dem supporter, and do not agree with the tories and their generally discriminatory and even moronic policis. What I am posting about, however, is Maria. I have met her in person, not knowing she was a politician, only finding out after I mentioned I am studying government and politics at A-level. When I met her, she was very courteous, and spoke a lot of sense. While much of what she said is not in the Conservative manifesto, she does have Conservative values and so forth. However, it was clear from talking to her that she is very in favour of equal opportunities, anti-discrimination and in fact she acknowledges the importance of immigrants in the UK, most notably the NHS. This is not to say I am in total disagreement with her in regards to politics, for I am not, but I have seen plastered over the internet this one quote and people judging her over it. I struggle to believe she said this, I can personally vouch that she is not the type to say these things.
I understand that this may seem pro-Conservative and that my initial statements may make me seem like I'm covering my tracks, but it is the truth. I disagree with much of what the Conservatives believe regarding the European Union, disagree with their immigration policy and so forth. I also enjoyed Blair pretty much mauling David Cameron in Prime Minister's Question Time today. With this paragraph, it is obvious I'm trying to get in your good books enough to have my comment shown, but I still believe in what I have said, be it my dislike for the conservatives, or support for both Labour and Maria Hutchings.
