"burn thatchers grave" - 5 comments

Believe it or not, my appeal to the cathartic benefits of performing a traditional English dance upon the grave of Finchley-based female premiers (in hobnailed boots, no less), has just came top of one sicko's AOL "burn thatchers grave" query.

It does rather miss the point of my article. All the same, it seems the desire to perform something akin to a paso doble six feet above the Milk Snatcher is widespread: just look at the other pages the query turns up.

Like the BBC, who also do their obits in advance, I'm already well prepared for the big day when she goes - an MP3 file of 'Ding Dong the Witch's Dead' has already been secured and plans are well in hand for a public vote on a suitable memorial to be built on the site of her grave.

Two main suggestions to date, a dance floor and a public convenience.

Personally I'd go for the latter as it feels more like a compliment returned.

Do you remember when they were on about putting up a statue? Outside the Palace of Westminster, I think it was. Not being a driver, let alone having an HGV licence, I'd have felt quite left out...

I suspect they may start popping up in Budapest, Prague, Moscow, though.

I must say, I was always of the opinion that the guy who knocked the head of that statue of her should not have been prosecuted for criminal damage but awarded the Turner Prize for his spectacular contribution to performance art.

Surely a mass singalong of Elvis Costello's Tramp The Dirt Down is in order.

"Well I hope I don't die too soon / I pray the lord my soul to save / Oh, I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave. / Because there's one thing I know / I'd like to live long enough to savour / 'cos when they finally put you in the ground / I'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down".

Not bad recall off the top of my head...

When she goes I will not be joining in with the all the gravetop dancing.

No objection to it - its just that I took part in a three-hour, 6-abreast queue to get into Live 8 and its not something I fancy having to go through again.

Awww.. what the hell. Its in a good cause!
